Janelle Monae’s an American singer, songwriter, actress, and producer, plus a Grammy nominee. She drops tracks in pop, soul, funk, indie pop, and hip hop styles. She bounced from Kansas City to New York to hit up theater studies at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
At first she was gunnin’ for a Broadway run, but she switched gears to crank out music she figured could flip the world on its head. As an actress, Janelle popped off in flicks like Moonlight, Hidden Figures, and Welcome to Marwen. Moonlight snagged the Oscar for Best Picture. Monae even voiced Dr. Monae in the Rio 2 cartoon!
